Wildlife in Estonia

Estonia is a wonderful place to see wildlife at any time of year with fantastic birdwatching including Steller’s Eiders, Ural Owl, Pygmy Owl, Great Snipe, Nutcracker, Citrine Wagtail, Lesser Spotted Eagle, 8 species of Woodpeckers, sea ducks, Hazel Grouse and massive numbers of birds on migration. Butterflies, dragonflies and flowers are equally exciting and the country is renowned for its large number of mammals – over 150 Wolves, 500-600 Brown Bears and almost 20 000 Beavers plus Flying Squirrels and an incredible 700-800 Lynx, one of the strongest populations in Europe!

Birdwatching in Estonia

Although not widely discovered yet, Estonia is ideal country for observing one of the most spectacular natural shows – massive bird migration. This smallest and northernmost Baltic country lies on the crossroad of the Eastern Atlantic migratory flyway: Estonia is locked between the Finnish Gulf, eastern coast of Baltic Sea and Lake Peipsi near the Russian border. In this respect, geographically the Estonian waters and coastline are the natural stepping-stones, the most natural flyway between breeding and wintering areas for millions of Arctic waterbirds, making birdwatching in Estonia fabulous at this time of year. But it is not just about non-stop passage: the country’s long and indented coastline, shallow and sheltered bays, straits, coastal meadows, marshes, lagoons and over 1000 islands in good natural condition are crucial feeding and stopover sites.

Nature Photography for corporate groups as a team building or Incentive event in Estonia

The hides is located in North-East Estonia in Alutaguse, 1,5 hours drive from Tallinn. It’s located in Forest on the edge of a clearing, so light conditions are good.

Lux photo hide has four camera positions, two higher, two lower, bunk bed and dry toilet. There are room for three people or two photographers at the same time. Optimal time for photographing the brown bear begins in the 15 th of May and lasts until at the end of June.

The Estonian coast is one of the main migration centerpoints in Europe. Up to 100 million migrating birds pass through in a year, drawing enthusiastic birders from all over Europe annually. But bears, wolves, lynxes and elks also live in Estonia. Western-taiga-type forests alternate with huge bogs and semi-natural habitats rich in plant species. An extensive network of protected areas has been created to preserve this diverse nature; 22% of Estonia’s land area is protected.
