Lights of the Arctic Tours 7 days/6 nights in January - March 2019
Day 1 (Tuesday): Arrival Tromso
Arrival in Tromso, transfer with regular airport express bus to the city centre, short walk to Hotel Radisson BluTromso**** or similar, check-in.
Day 2 (Wednesday): Tromso
Tromso is a one of the world’slargest cities North of the Arctic Circle and a city, where modern urban lifeand breath-taking arctic nature gohand in hand. During morning citytour we get acquainted with the world’s most northernBotanical gardens and enjoy theviews of the mountains to the east and south.We continue with a visit TromsoUniversity Museum where we learn fascinating factson nature and culture in northern Norwayand the indigenous Sami people. Following that, we continuearound the island, passingLake Prestvatn with the Meteorological Instituteand cross thebridge to the Arctic Cathedralfor a visit to this masterpiece with amonumental stained-glass window.Inthe evening we go to the Aurora Camp where we are equipped withthermal overalls andboots to keep us nice and warm all evening. 300 friendlyAlaskan huskies are waiting to greet us and enjoy some cuddles. Weenjoy atraditional Norwegian dinner and wait for the Northern Light to appear in thesky.
Day 3 (Thursday): Tromso-Alta
Today we continueto Alta. The distance between Tromso and Alta is about 300km. The trip takes around 8 hours and includes twoferry rides and a lunch break. The trip takes us through the most stunningmountain landscapes and is something to remember for a long time.We arrivelate afternoon in Alta and check in at Hotel Thon Alta***. Theevening offers an optional Northern Lights tour. We visit thefamily owned Sorrisniva Adventure Facility which is perfectly locatedto maximize our chances of seeing the magnificent NorthernLights. We have anexcellent opportunity to learn more about this intriguing phenomenon as wellas the history of Alta.
Day 4 (Friday): Alta
Today we start with a visit to the award-winningAlta Museum, located at the site of early settlement of Finnmark datingaround 11,000 yearsago and featuring exhibitions on local culture andhistory. Afterwards we visit to the elegant and modern Northern LightsCathedral located inthe central part of town. The balance of the day is reservedfor exploring more of this arctic town on our own. The evening offersoptional sleighride under the northern lights. We travel to a farm in the nearby countryside where weclimb aboard a sleigh and get bundled up in warm blankets. The sleigh ispulled by a Norwegian Fjord Horse through the forestand along the AltaRiver, while we sit back and enjoy the peace and beauty around us. At the endof the ride, we stop at awilderness shelter where a traditional dinner is servedaround a warm fire and if we are lucky we are dazzled by the NorthernLights.
Day 5 (Saturday): Alta-Saariselka
Today we continue south from Alta to Saariselka. Thejourney takes approximately 6 hours, during which we have the opportunity totake in thebreath-taking beauty of the changing Arctic landscape. In the far North of Finnish Lapland liesthe popular resort ofInari-Saariselka. The unique northern countryside,national parks, lake areas, rivers and highland fells offer a wealth ofopportunities for year-round travel. In winter, the Northern Lights danceacross the sky up to 200 days a year. We arrive earlyafternoon and check inat Hotel Santa Tunturi****.
Day 6 (Sunday): Saariselka-Kirkenes
We continue 270 km further northto reach the Norwegian town Kirkenes almost at the border to Russia. Our eyesfeast on the Arctic nature aswe make your way up north. We arrive and check-inat Hotel Thon Kirkenes**** In the afternoon we depart for the King CrabSafari - one ofthe absolute highlights of Northern Norway with the chance totaste the local delicacies known worldwide. Heading out on the Kirkenes Fjordwe come face to face with mighty Berent Sea. Once our king crab has been caughtit is prepared for a most delicious lunch.
Day 7 (Monday): Kirkenes
Regular transfer to the airport and departure.
