Arctic New Year Northern Lights Tour 7 days/6 nights December 2019 - January 2020
Day 1 (Friday): Arrival Saariselka
Arrival to Ivalo Airport and regular transfer to the Hotel Santa Tunturi**** for check-in. The unique northern countryside, national parks, lake areas, rivers and highland fells offer a wealth ofopportunities for year-round travel. In winter, the Northern Lights dance across the sky up to 200 days a year. The legendary Saariselka is the northernmost travel destination in Finland andboasts a variety of services. Here, the Sami culture is still very evident in everyday life.
Day 2 (Friday): Saariselka
In the morning, we put on our snowshoes to feel the crunch of snow under the feet. We capture the true feeling of winter in the northern woods as we explore the nearby white wilderness offorest and hills and the Urho Kekkonen National Park, surrounding Saariselka. The afternoon is at leisure and we have the opportunity to try a Finnish sauna available at the hotel. The eveningoffers an optional reindeer safari. We are taken into the quiet evening forest on a sleigh pulled by a reindeer and maybe we will even get to marvel at the beautiful Northern Lights dancing in thesky. Upon return to the camp a nice warm campfire and warm drink is waiting for us before going back to the hotel.
Day 3 (Saturday): Saariselka-Sinetta
This morning we continue our adventure to Sinetta, located 25 km from Rovaniemi. Along the way, we visit one of the highlights of the tour – traditional Sami farmers who tell us about theirreindeers, and teach us how to throw the Suopunki (Sami lasso). Sitting in a two-person sleigh, pulled by a reindeer, we experience this traditional and peaceful way of moving through the whitelandscape over the lake and through the forest. A typical Sami three course lunch is included at the farm. Check in at Arctic Snow Hotel & Glass Igloos. We enjoy the warmth of our Glass Iglooand weather permitting we will have the opportunity to marvel at the amazing Northern Lights In the evening we are invited for a traditional Lappish three course dinner in a magnificent wooden“Kota”. The late evening also offer an optional snow sauna and outdoor Jacuzzi experience where only the sauna benches are made of wood!
Day 4 (Sunday): Sinetta – Rovaniemi
We depart to Rovaniemi and check-in at Hotel Santa Claus****. We are in for yet another winter adventure with a visit to the Husky Farm & Safari. We embark on a run through the forest behindour packs of huskies. After the trip there is time to visit the farm and enjoy a traditional outdoor lunch of Lappish sausage grilled on the campfire followed by Lappish pancakes.The daycontinues with a visit to the world-famous Santa Claus Village built right on the Arctic Circle and home to the real Santa Claus.
Day 5 (Monday): Rovaniemi
The day is at disposal for exploring the small and picturesque town at our own. In the evening we meet Santa Claus who pays a visit to the hotel before New Year’s Eve Gala Dinner buffet isserved at the hotel. The late evening offers an optional Mystical New Year Party located at Lapland’s magical border of the Arctic Circle. A lot of festivities are held for welcoming the New Yearat this venue. Fire, ice, darkness, snow, lights, music, dance are the combined elements that create a magical event. The mysterious shamans fuel the atmosphere and as the New Yearapproaches Santa Claus himself also appears. A giant snow disco, snow bars, firework displays and the spectacular New Year show bring us into the New Year, before going back to the hotelafter midnight.
Day 6 (Tuesday): Rovaniemi-Kemi-Rovaniemi
Today we experience one of the highlights of our winter adventure. We travel to Kemi, board the Sampo Icebreaker and spend 4 hours on this unforgettable vessel breaking though the ice ofthe northern Gulf of Bothnia. This extraordinary experience includes a guided tour of the ship, ice swimming and a three-course lunch at the on-board restaurant. We have the opportunity tojump in the sea and float in the middle of the largest ice field in Europe! Everyone is fitted with a warm survival suit and those who dare receive a certificate by the ship authorities.
Day 7 (Wednesday): Rovaniemi
Regular transfer to Rovaniemi airport.
